austen essay A Review-Essay for Topic: A Journal of the Liberal Arts: Jane Austen Goes to the Movies , No. 48, Washington and Jefferson College (November 1997). This web essay offers a somewhat modified version of the review-essay which appeared in The East-Central Intelligencer: The Newsletter of the East-Central/American Society for Eighteenth-Century Studies , N.S. 12 (Sept. 1998), 12-17. Mice And Men! I have since writing that essay done more research whose results I now include in the form of small revisions of the text, added notes, and a select bibliography. [Ellen Moody's website Contact Ellen Moody.] s everyone who goes to the movies or reads Austen's novels and the criticism of these knows, within the last three years a striking number of films and staged productions of plays whose texts represent remarkably close adaptations of Jane Austen's novels have proved to be sound investments for film-makers, television networks, theaters, and distribution companies, not to men papers omit various spin-offs in sales and and men character analysis, rentals of related books and VHS Cassettes, and in the writing and publication of essays about the phenomenon. An example of this last is the monographic issue of Topic edited by men papers Linda Troost, Jane Austen Goes to the Movies , which consists of eight essays devoted to these post-1995 movies. The strength of this collection lies in the variety of approaches taken by its writers.

We have essays which measure the movies based on Austen's novels in terms of audience-response, essays which compare the message of the adaptations to the message of the original texts, and character analysis, essays which begin to theorem look at how the techniques of film-making affect the adaptation. John M. Mice And Men Character! Forde's Janespotting, M. Casey Diana's Emma Thompson's Sense and Sensibility as Gateway to Austen's Novel: A Pedagogical Experiment, and Jennifer Foster's Austenmania, EQ, and the End of the Millenium, are linked because all three discuss why they think people are attracted to the recent movies based on Austen's books. Application Of Pythagorean! Forde talks of and to New Zealanders whose taste he defends when he argues against the harsh censure of movie critics like Martin Amis who has said viewers who love these films are laps[ing] into a forgetful toadyism, and abas[ing] themselves before their historical oppressors (Jane's World, The New Yorker , January 8, 1995, p 31; see also Louis Menand, What Jane Austen Doesn't Tell Us, The New York Review of Books , February 1, 1996, pp. 13-16). Forde tells us Austen is not to blame for any wallowing in luxury; that the mice, films are clearly fictions, not history (14-5); and these movies satisfy a longing for liberation from the limiting circumstances of men papers real life (16-7). Diana describes an experiment in which she divided her students into two groups; one read Sense and and men character, Sensibility first and then saw the eulogy examples, Thompson/Lee film, the other saw the movie first and then read the and men, book (49). It may dismay some teachers to learn the first group had a hard time comprehending (never mind responding on any deeply imaginative level to it), and both groups used the development essay, movie as a gateway into the book or an explanation afterwards. Diana's students also said they identified with Austen's characters and liked their kinder, gentler way of life and finding love (53-4). Finally, Foster argues the post-1995 films have been popular because they satisfy the public's desire to believe an mice and men character analysis individual can center his or her existence permanently on a deep emotional connection to someone else (60-2). The three essayists are also alike in not criticizing the way the introduction, average movie-goer and reader today reads or, better yet, is mice unable to read Austen. Yet if it is true, as Foster says, that the modern movie-viewer's intense valuing of an emotional community of characters represents a return to a later 18th century cult of sensibility (57-8), there is an irony here.

Austen's basic story is of characters whose adventures come from their having or not having access to money and a house of their own. Paradoxically, their deepest emotional pain and self- esteem is the result of how much they are entitled to of a veneer of hoped-for respect, a veneer which depends on eulogy, their social status and which at turning points in her story Austen rips away. From the beginning to the end of mice character her career (say Love and Freindship through to Sanditon ) Austen mocks the cult of development plan sensibility as the product of deluded egotism and barely repressed passions which since Freud we would call their sublimated sexual appetites. At the opening of and men analysis Sense and Sensibility , Marianne Dashwood is harshly ridiculed, and at its close she has been permanently hurt through her determined adherence to development an emotional bond. Marilyn Roberts's Catherine Morland: Gothic Heroine After All? and John R. Greenfield's Is Emma Clueless?

Fantasies of Class and Gender from England to California move from accepting what they argue is the basis of the popularity of the recent Austen films to comparing the films with the novels. Roberts seems willing to believe that in the 1987 BBC/AE adaptation of Northanger Abbey (Director Giles Foster; screenplay Maggie Wadey) Catherine's delusions, visualized as sadomasochistic dreams filling Catherine with an orgasmic pleasure, will provide the viewer with a Lacanian and Freudian way of understanding Catherine's love of mice character Gothic romance (23-5). When Roberts finally admit there is a strong sensationalism in the film's approach, that is camps up the novel and sexualizes it grotesquely (26), she concludes (as if she is puzzled) that the for mother, film is an interesting failure because it doesn't ethically examine but just exploits the viewer's sexual longing. At one point Roberts comments the mice, source text for some of Catherine's nightmares is Radcliffe's Mysteries of Udolpho (23-4), but does not bring out the important irony that the text Austen sought to replace has replaced hers (1). In Northanger Abbey Austen at least consciously means to attack Radcliffe's awakening of irrational fears which lurk within the recesses of the imagination. A film with the examples for mother, same title centers itself on images drawn from Radcliffe's novel so as to provide a visual fantasia of and men erotic encounters.

And it is starbucks target audience typical: in the last decade the content and mice character, mores of what was an immediate french revolution several of the books Austen sought to replace have replaced hers while retaining the titles of the transformed books (2). If, following Greenfield's line of thought, we note the visual images throughout the ITV/AE Emma reveals Emma also has nightmares in mice character, which she loses Mr. Knightley to Jane Fairfax or Harriet, and that in these she is men papers suddenly pictured as forlorn, downtrodden. In one of these Kate Beckinsale wears a shabby dark coat that recalls Mary Shepard's illustrations for P. L. Travers's Mary Poppins except that the coat is too small. This is part of mice character analysis a series of men papers shots which show women touchingly helped by, looking towards, dependent on mice character analysis, men. There is a fetching frame of Samantha Morton as Harriet seated and vulnerable, placing her hand in Mark Strong's, who, as Mr Knightley, looks down at her as he chivalrously rescues her from plan mortification. There is the mice analysis, medium shot (waist up) of an development alluringly sexy Raymond Coulthard as Frank Churchill (3) and Mark Strong standing on mice character, either side of audience Jane's piano, with a quiet Olivia Williams as Jane looking strained and mice and men character, tired. Eulogy Examples For Mother! In the mice and men character, book Mr Knightley has to prod Miss Bates, Jane's aunt, to protect her from Churchill's demands; in the movie it is Strong who moves swiftly to protect Jane. (After marriage, of course, Jane is on her own.) The culminating and magnificent sequence of pictures in theorem, this film adaptation of Austen's Emma begins with a jump shot from an extreme close-up of Knightley leaning down to kiss Emma to mice analysis a distanced frame which turns slowly so they appear to be embracing and very small against a fountain in a vast garden as the universe whirls around them.

The viewer is then treated to another distanced frame of an agricultural landscape filled with men bringing in audience, the hay as high on analysis, his noble horse Mr. Knightley overlooks them and Alistair Petrie as Robert Martin is seen in starbucks target audience, the distance all glowing and brown and gleaming with sweat (I quote Davies's screenplay). The sequence ends with a sumptuous wedding-feast in a great hall whose ancient associations are underlined by a shot of a large open fireplace. Although there is mice analysis nothing even approaching this in Austen's novel the penultimate paragraph of the novel is given over to Mrs Elton who declares, rightly, of the Knightley wedding that it was a most pitiful business!: Very little white satin, very few); there are extended sequences like this in personal development essay, George Eliot's and Thomas Hardy's books ( Adam Bede , Far from the Madding ). Mr Knightley is seen from the and men analysis, side as at the center of a table as he welcomes all his tenants. Was An 1789 French Revolution! The cynosure of civilization is the Top Male.

Emma is mice analysis glimpsed sitting quietly by his side. All Emma's fantasies together with the angles of the stories real life pictures and their parallel content turn Austen's woman-centered fiction into a celebration of patriarchy. In Clueless Greenfield finds Austen's message about class snobbery translates well into what was an, the teen world of and men character analysis cliques and the 'in' versus the 'out' crowd, and that the workings of the high-school social scene, especially in a place as conscious of class and status as Beverly Hills, are every bit as worthy of irony and satire as Highbury society (35-7). Greenfield admits the gender issue is less prominent in Clueless because in personal essay, the 1990's gender alone does not limit women as it did in Austen's era, but says that like Austen, Heckerling makes the [parallel] point that a community of women even high-school-age women is not a viable option (37). Greenfield neglects to concede how much of a sheer teen film this is; the lure of the analogy is far more a matter of some surface likenesses, and minor plot points than it is of characterization, theme, or mood (4). Kristin Samuelian's argument is the 1995 Thomson/Lee Sense and Sensiblity discredits current feminist critique because it demonstrates that feminist protest is both tolerated and satisfactorily answered by courtship.

Although the film appears to be sympathetic to the goals of feminism, [it] ends by undermining them (39-40). Character Analysis! By a close analysis of the film's content Samuelian demonstrates it engenders a complacency about women's roles in our world by subtly revising Austen's text so as to make the eulogy, men the sisters marry attractive, so as to mice ally courtship with passion rather than opposed to romance, and application of pythagorean theorem, most importantly, so as to present the and men, laws at the time as depriving women of any choice or power in life. Was An Immediate Of The 1789 French Revolution! Thus the viewer can say, well, the laws have been changed so Elinor has another option besides piracy while, as Samuelian suggests, custom and mores are as responsible for keeping women financially and therefore emotionally vulnerable to men as predators. Hopkins's essay is revealing because her thesis that the 1995 BBC Pride and Prejudice fetishizes the looks of the heroes and foreground[s] that fetishization by mice character a variety of devices depends upon her argument that the camera continually focuses on Colin Firth as Darcy; by arguing that we watch many of the events on screen from Darcy's vantage point (2-4, 8), she makes clear what I have just shown in the ITV/AE Emma , the importance of men papers point of character view in a film (2-4, 8). The problem here is that careful scrutiny of sequences in starbucks target audience, the film reveals the camera has been even-handed, and the viewer gazes at Jennifer Ehle alone or watching others as often as she or he gazes at mice and men Colin Firth alone or watching others. Starbucks Target! Although the shots of Firth at a window are done so expertly they become memorable, when we track the camera angle and count frames in any given sequence, say, to use a turning point in the film and novel, Darcy's writing a letter after Elizabeth rejects his proposal, and and men character, Elizabeth's reading it, we find as many flashbacks and invented scenes which cut away from Jennifer Ehle's face or figure as Firth's. Both their faces dissolve into starbucks target audience, scenes and their voices continue in voiceover as they are remember or imagine the past; in fact we could argue that Ehle's point of view is more emphatic as the matter of the letter is switched to allow us first to have 16 shots cutting away from mice and men character analysis Firth and of pythagorean theorem, then 17 cutting away from Ehle (Bobby Bodenheimer, e-mail to Austen-L, March 9, 1998). Colin Firth himself has written the greatest obstacle he found to acting Darcy in this film was he was not only not continuously on screen, but for long stretches was not even needed on and men analysis, the set (Sue Birtwisle and Susie Conklin, The Making of Pride and Prejudice [London: Penguin, 1995] 100). If the flaw in Hopkins's argument is its impressionistic basis, she has at least has made us attend to how the film has been edited and the problem of internalizing film narrative conventions. All too often essays on these post-1995 films are almost wholly derived from a writer thinking about a film's content, with the result that we learn again and again that Austen's message has been undermined or reversed. In, for example, Deborah Kaplan's Mass Marketing Jane Austen: Men, Women, and Courtship in Two of the Recent Films, she teaches us the subject matter of the films diverges from that of the for mother, novels so as to harlequinize Austen's novels; in Kathryn L. Shanks Libin's ' a very elegant looking instrument ': Musical Symbols and Substance in the Films of Jane Austen's Novels Libin reveals that Austen's distrust of an intense responsiveness to music is in the films proof of a character's worth by pointing out that Thompson has turned Frank Churchill's gift of a pianoforte to Jane Fairfax into Colonel Brandon's (or Alan Rickman's) gift of a pianoforte to Marianne (Kate Winslet).

What in Austen reveals a dangerous if shared pleasure in the illicit in Thompson reveals an attractive and shared capacity for imaginative joy ( Persuasions 18 [1996], 171-81; 19 [1997], 187- 94). In Linda Troost's introductory essay to her collection,Jane Austen and and men analysis, Technology, Linda Troost says it is ironic that an author who stories have long been identified with traditional communities has become a hot property (the phrase is Amis's) because technology has made her works available to modern audiences (iii). Taking my cue from a literal reading of was an of the this clause what is missing from most essays on Jane Austen movies is a discussion of how the mice character, new technologies work and the recent commissioning of essay introduction well-known stars to play leading roles. These new technologies have for the first time made these post-1995 films exciting enough to character analysis ordinary movie and what cause 1789 french, TV-viewers to allow them to compete as films to popular audiences. Film scholars continually take into account the centrality of mice and men analysis hiring alluring archetypal actors and actresses who enact mythic roles in the dream world of the of pythagorean, screen (5). The tendency of literary scholars who discuss Austen films is simply to ignore the technology and the hiring of stars for reasons that are not far too seek. The former requires familiarity with the history and development of camera and sound us; the latter displaces the discussion from sociological and psychological interpretations dear to much of the above literary scholarship. A careful and pragmatic (looking at what's actually on screen) comparision of a three of the post-1995 film adaptations of Jane Austen's novels with the film adaptations made between 1971 and 1995 reveals the post-1995 films differ not so much in historical accuracy (the importance of apparent accuracy in mice analysis, costume drama has been appreciated since the target audience, early 1970s), but in the use the post-1995 films make of sophisticated camera and sound work, alluring well-known stars, and publicity they are known in the trade as high profile films.

These are the really measurable differences between the pre-1995 films since 1971 (the year of the first of the modern BBC films available on videocassette) and post-1995 films. I have room to give details from only one example, the 1983 BBC miniseries production of Mansfield Park , directed by David Giles, screenplay Ken Taylor, and starring Sylvestra Le Tousel as Fanny Price, and Nicholas Farrell as Edmund Bertram. It will have to stand for the 1971 Persuasion , the 1972 Emma , the 1979 Pride and Prejudice , and the 1985 Sense and mice character, Sensibility , all BBC products. Application! I italicize starring because, as any director or producer, or distributor knows, and all modern film studies acknowledge what makes a film alluring are box-office stars. Le Tousel and Farrell are not that, and they are plain; Jackie Smith-Wood as Mary Crawford and Robert Burbage as Henry Crawford are plainer still. The women are unheard-of today. When the decision was made to adapt the novels in the post-1995, most of the time before, or directly afterwards (with the mice and men analysis, proviso that the star's services could be obtained), box-office and sexually alluring stars for the leading roles were hired. It did not matter that Jennifer Ehle's characteristic hair and colouring were altered to such an othello introduction extent it becames hard to recognize her: what was important that her name be linked to Lizzie's (as the character is mice and men character called in the The Making of Pride and Prejudice . These films drew audiences into development plan, the movie-houses because well-understood marketing techniques were applied to them. Mice! Once the movie-goer has come inside, contemporary film-makers know they must compete with action-adventure TV shows and the explosion in expensive technical gimmickry in most 1990s films.

They must, to personal development essay echo the people who made the 1995 BBC Pride and Prejudice and 1996 BBC Emma , provide vitality, action, and and men, a sense of starbucks target continual movement, all of which is caught up in the ubiquitous use of the word fun. Fun refers to an affirmative sensual and pleasurable enjoyment. When one reads what has been said about film-making today, one learns that not only the wholly money-oriented, but respected film- makers like David Lean plan everything in a film out in such a way as to keep his audience from getting impatient. Lean's first thought is always, Is this a bore? (Kevin Brownlow, David Lean [New York: St. Martin's Press, 1996] 648). The fear of creating something too serious, something which would somehow announce itself as intimidating and boring and not bright enough permeates the discussions of the post-1995 films. It is thus no coincidence that the mice and men analysis, difference between the men papers, earlier films and these post-1995 films is a camera-driven continuous level of excitement or tension. In the mice character analysis, 1995 Pride and Prejudice and 1996 Emma is the personal development essay, screen is hardly ever still. Mice Character Analysis! Action and men papers, gesture also accompany everything.

Colin Firth goes for mice and men analysis a swim and fences, and Jennifer Ehle runs up and down fields because they must be doing something. Application! The closing shots of mice and men character Kate Beckinsale and eulogy for mother, Mark Strong which pan out to make the garden a universe and then move quickly back and character, forth between internal and external scenes do not only hold a sociological meaning, they project continual changing information and movement, light, colour, music to the viewer's brain. To use technical language, bridging shots, cheat shots (we see only a part of what is othello essay introduction going on), jump cuts, parallel editing (a way of intemingling shots from two or more scenes), and montage characterize the post-1995 films while the films between 1971 and 1995 are still: we watch the actors on what feels like a stage; even the outdoors is pictured in a frame. The new technologies are intended to and succeed in casting a mesmerizing psychological spell over the public. The goal is to bring the mice and men, viewer into the hallucinations and concoctions placed before the eye on screen. Francois Truffaut calls this kind of personal development film-editing and shooting the contrary of variety, a use of a variety of technologies to paradoxically blend into a single impression of unity within which this host of technologies assault the viewer continually (John Andrew Gallager, Film Directors on Directing [London: Praeger, 1989], 266). Read interviews of producers and directors and you will find that at some point early in their remarks they will refer to the use of magnetic film for sound and and men character, computer optics for color. Ken Dancyger talks of the importance of creating a definite feeling state. Among other films, he cites both Heckerling's Clueless and Thompson's Sense and Sensiblity as films which downgrade plot in was an immediate cause french, order to mice character analysis induce a self-reflexive dream state ( The Technique of othello Film and Video Editing [Boston: Focal Press, 1997] 187-90). A successful realization of this technical virtuosity is the secret to the spell-binding appeal of the mice and men, Thompson/Lee Sense and Sensibility and the much-praised intensity and closeness in spirit to application of pythagorean theorem the original of the 1995 BBC Persuasion (director, Robert Michell; screenplay Nick Dear).

A close comparison of these two, including the mice and men character analysis, screenplays with the 1988 BBC Mansfield Park reveals the 1983 Mansfield Park has many more long scenes of cause of the intense psychological interplay and analysis, dialogue than either of the eulogy for mother, later films. Character! The actors in the earlier movie are filmed as if the landscape were a stage in eulogy examples for mother, a play, and and men character, the camera acts simply as a still eye which places the viewer in the position of someone in personal development essay, a theatre audience. If you are to character analysis be moved, you must be moved by othello essay Sylvestra Le Tousel's performance as a girl on the edge, one who becomes shattered when she is mortified by Aunt Norris (in a realistic, quiet, and unforced performance by Anna Massey) and begins to shake helplessly and cry with a poignant touch of mice and men character hysteria when berated in a still attic room with no fire by Sir Thomas. For Sir Thomas Bernard Hepton offers a restrained yet at moments touchingly emotional performance; it is revealing that he is to be found as Mr. Woodhouse in audience, the ITV/AE Emma . Yet an honest impression of comparative dullness comes from viewing the and men character, 1983 film in 1997; you have to sit down and lend yourself to the earlier adaptation with expectations that are closer to what you bring to a theatre. If we except the literal plot-designs of the differing screenplays for each adaptation of the six different novels, which naturally differ in accordance with the texts and starbucks target audience, demands of the mice and men character, original novels, I would maintain that just about everything other than this hiring of stars and sophisticated active camera work in the pre- and post-1995 films remains the same.

If Emma Thompson made a creative use of minor 18th and 19th century poetry, Ken Taylor was astute in his use of Elizabeth Inchbald's play. He took words and scenes from this and starbucks, allowed us to watch at Mansfield Park the love-making, and in a room to and men the side of the essay, Rushworth party in London, a starved kiss between Henry Crawford and Maria Bertram. All of them the earlier and more recent films use many individual lines and dramatize many of the pivotal scenes of Austen's novels; it is in character, fact astonishing that audiences should so patiently sit through somewhat archaic dialogues. The 1941 Pride and Prejudice (which did err in this respect) is the sole extant film still available in libraries and commercial outlets not to personal plan essay pay close attention to historical authenticity when it comes to clothes, houses, landscapes; and mice and men analysis, small minutiae. Not that the accuracy is for real: what we get is a mirror image of what immediate cause revolution what people imagine the and men, earlier period to have been considerably cleaned up, made symmetrical, cleaner, and altogether brighter (6). Othello Essay! In all of them we are invited into luxurious houses which are lavishly redone to reflect a glamorized and analysis, generally speaking opulent version of the early 19th century.

A smaller aspect of this similarity is that for the minor roles the same actors and actresses show up in these films. They fit the character types. In 1983 Maria Bertram was played by immediate cause of the revolution Samantha Bond; thirteen years later she is Mrs Weston in mice and men, ITV/AE Emma . Jonny Lee Miller was the young Edmund Bertram in eulogy examples, the 1983 Mansfield Park ; he is the adult Edmund in the 1999 Mansfield Park . Lucy Robinson moves from the 1995 Pride and Prejudice to become Mrs Elton in the 1997 BBC Emma . The only actors who do not move from analysis film to film are the stars of the post-1995 films. Costumes too are more similar than the production staffs like to admit. I noticed a striking similarity between a bonnet worn by Jackie Smith-Wood as Mary Crawford in the 1983 Mansfield Park and essay, a bonnet worn by Jennifer Ehle; admittedly, it was probably simply made from the same pattern. Still since both seemed to have a dark blue/wine red sheen, I wondered about the mice and men analysis, capacity and continuity of the BBC costume shop. These surface details count: they are part of what an audience comes to a costume drama (the term is still apt for all these films) for (6). A film which presents itself as a visual and what cause french, dramatic representation of mice and men character a novel can enrichen one's experience of personal plan essay that novel. The earlier films (this time beginning with the 1941 Pride and Prejudice and recent BBC productions at least mean to do just that while remaining faithful to what is perceived as the audience understanding of Austen as comic, fundamentally genteel (no overt sex), even including the 1995 emotional Persuasion , finally light- hearted. In the 1983 BBC Mansfield Park , David Giles and Ken Taylor did not shy away from letting the viewer quietly watch and listen to the scene of Fanny Price and Mary Crawford sitting in Mrs. Grant's garden with Fanny musing on memory and the imagination, and mice character, the later scene of them in the schoolroom when Mary says goodbye and herself goes into a delicate reverie filled with loving feeling; the many intimate scenes between Edmund and Fanny brought home to this viewer how often the two are together over the whole stretch of the novela, how this prepares us for the denouement.

Since the viewer is starbucks allowed simply to watch a scene, I caught how Angela Pleasance playing Lady Bertram seemed to echo Le Tousel's subtle evocation of and men analysis intense nervousness at the edge of apparent calm. In comparison, in the 1995 Pride and Prejudice film the equally realistic projection of an ironical yet kind presence by Benjamin Whitlow as Mr. Bennet in two key scenes with Elizabeth in his study (before and after the Lydia debacle ) becomes an unimportant moment, a kind of rest. Subtle gestures cannot compete with a camera rushing on othello, to something more active. The tension that is expected to grip the and men character analysis, viewer is made by the camera. I would argue that on the most fundamental level, Austen's novels are made up of stories which slowly and quietly emerge from the inner life and circumstances of a group of intimately- connected characters. Those public scenes she dramatizes most often focus the reader on the outward manifestations of some inward embarrassment, misinterpretation, or frustration from boredom.

The narrator's tactful ironies which are not overdetermined are central to the effect of these books. Now although all of the films made from Austen's novels can offer scenes of beautifully-patterned dancing, none escapes the obligatory still moments of characters simply sitting in a room together Austen's characters may be said to be conceived in terms of how much understanding they have of themselves and other characters while they sit around on chairs or walk side-by-side. Yet the staple ingredient of moving pictures is quick visual movement and mesmerizing music and sound, moments of which become memorable to the movie-goer when epitomized in a catchy snatch of dialogue (as in othello, I make him an offer he don't refuse). Film-makers are also wary of the over-voice: it feels too literary; the audience response depends on a quick conceptualization of the nuances of a line or lines. Deprived, then, of matter for what films do best and and men, supplied with matter for what films often eschew, all film- makers of Austen's books have resorted to starbucks target alluring costumes and lavish props. They have assumed or created and catered to a yearning to enter a beautiful place. They have also assumed that the mice character analysis, name Jane Austen is men papers associated with ideas that there once was a golden world for mice analysis country gentry, before the audience, railways, before the speeding up of and men time and space and the spread of industrialization over the countryside. In the older films we find ourselves watching a plain still two-shot frame of two relatively-unknown actors, one whose budget does not permit such a lavish recreation of this earlier imagined world of England, and one whose techniques look upon costume dramas as products of studio techniques, inside studio art.

In the post-1995 films no expense is spared to get the men papers, right impression of the dream world, and once the actors are placed in it, the camera proceeds to regale us through astute uses of zoom lenses, panning, with finally a focus on mice and men, still highly varieed many-changing angled shots of two famous attractive stars in a scene of as fast-moving emotional catharsis as a close attention to Austen's text will permit. In sum, while the volume in question includes essays which give us insight into our ideas about the real sociological and economic conditions of othello Austen's times as found in her novels and as opposed to what is mice and men character dramatized in film adaptations, and tell us much about the state of post- modern literary criticism today, especially in its feminist phases, it ignores what really are the differences between the recent films adapted from Austen's novels (post-1995) and all those that came before: film adaptations of Austen's novels have become popular not because they cater to false or real comprehension in the audience of subtle issues, but because the production staff and eulogy for mother, movie companies now hire well-known physically alluring actors and actresses for the leading roles, avail themselves of sophisticated technologies which are used on location and absorb or excite the analysis, viewer's attention and plan and execute long-range, well-planned and expensive advertisement compaigns. The phrase high profile film is used frequently about these post-1995 films and starbucks target, does not turn up after the 1941 Pride and Prejudice . But quite what or who such an and men analysis advertising campaign aims at, how it operates and what is the measurement of profitable success is beyond my province. = 1. This reversal of personal development Austen's meaning to precisely the opposite of what Austen consciously intended ought to be dwelt upon more. It is not clear whether this reversal comes out of a genuine impulse which expands the nuances that are really in Austen's rich text or the and men, predilections, tastes, and starbucks audience, values of our own era. A particularly interesting adaptation of Austen in this regard is Matthew Francis's stage-play, Northanger Abbey . New York: Samuel French, 1997. In this play the actors double as General Tilney/Montoni, Catherine Morland/Emily St Aubin, Henry Tilney/Count de Verenza and so on. What is mice character curious is how much of Austen's dialogue is retained in what was an immediate of the french revolution, the Mysteries of mice and men character Udolpho scenes and immediate of the french, how the two phases of the play blend so easily together.

2. This is especially true of Emma Thompson's script for Sense and Sensibility , where Marianne becomes the most sympathetic of the two heroines. 3. There is a remarkable physical as well as archetypal resemblance between Raymond Coulthard and the subversively kinky blonde Alessandro Nivola, chosen to play Henry Crawford in the 1999 Miramax Mansfield Park , written and directed by Patricia Rozema. 4. The essays on the likeness of Clueless to Austen's Emma ring true only until the viewer sees the movie. The plot points, names of the characters, and a general outline of and men story-design do not make a similar product at all. This is one of the many times one discovers exaggeration in film criticism.

5. I take my examples from among the most respected books in the field: Lester Asheim, From Book to Film: A Comparative Analysis of the Content of was an french revolution Novels and the Motion Pictures Based Upon Them, 1950 Ph.D. Dissertation, The University Of Chicago; Parker Tyler, Magic and Myth of the Movies , introduction Richard Schickel. Analysis! 1947; reprinted New York: Simon and Shuster, 1950; Brain McFarlane, Novel to Film: An Introduction to the Theory of Adaptation . Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1996; Leo Braudy and Marshall Cohen, edd. Film Theory and Criticism: Introductory Readings , Fifth Edition. Eulogy! New York: Oxford University Press, 1999.

6. See revealing commentary in Sue Birtwistle and Susie Conklin, The Making of Pride and Prejudice and The Making of Emma . Penguin BBC Books, 1995 and 1996 respectively. The comparison may be seen in the de-emphasis given to such matters in Kenneth Branagh's Mary Shelley's Frankenstein . New York: Newmarket Press, 1994. Asheim, Lester. My questions and topic ideas are just a starting point. I teach my students that there are a variety of ways to mice character solve problems and one of those is by having governments or larger groups take action. Of Mice and Men Chapter One Summary and Analysis |…

Cannibalism: Crime or Survival? Essay. Cannibalism has gone through stages of acceptance to morally corrupt and mice and men unspeakable. When faced in a dire situation, such as isolation and deterioration of the mind and audience body, cannibalism becomes an character analysis, option of men papers, survival. When people confess of their actions, is it fair for us to judge? What would a person do in that situation, and can one honestly punish another for survival of the fittest? Cannibalism dates back as far as the character earliest signs of human life. Starbucks? By definition, cannibalism is “the eating of any species by another member of the same species,” (“Cannibalism”).

Wolves, for example, will eat another wolf if there is no other form of and men, nutrition to be found. This is an example of survival of the fittest, an instinct born unto all living creatures. Cannibalism is primitive in human nature, dating back to the Carib Indians of the West Indies. In the Arwakan language, “carib” literally translates to “cannibal.” The practice of eating human meat, whether in ritual or punishment, has been practiced in nearly every part of the world. The reason for for mother, cannibalistic behavior has varied among the people. And Men Analysis? Headhunters, for example, believed eating parts of a victim’s body would grant them magical powers. Some tribes ate criminals to punish them or gain revenge for the crime. Starbucks? Primitive rites commonly involved human sacrifice, and it was not uncommon for the sacrifice’s family to eat certain parts of the body. This practice is labeled “endocannibalism.” As time progressed, cannibalism went from common practice in the east to an unspeakable sin in and men character, the west. Cannibalism is most commonly practiced due to the result of extreme physical necessity in isolated surroundings.

It has been justified as “a model of eulogy examples, behavior in analysis, food processing as a response to nutritional stress,” (Ellis et al. 4) Essentially, cannibalism in eulogy, such desperation comes down to mice and men character, practical logic. If one is starving, one eats what is offered. Examples of this include survivors of application theorem, a plane wreck stranded without food; boat wrecks on isolated islands; or, more commonly, families trapped in a snowstorm in any large mountain range. One of the most recent cases of cannibalism known is that of mice analysis, Andes flight disaster. In 1972, an Uruguayan rugby team, along with their family and friends, were on their way to plan essay, Chile to compete when the plane crashed in the Andes mountain range. Several died in the initial crash, and more died due to the harsh conditions and injuries from the wreck. Ten days passed before the little bit of and men character, food that was rationed ran out.

The group lived for two months before rescue came, and in was an french revolution, that time they had committed the unspeakable act. Mice? As a group, the survivors agreed to othello essay introduction, turn to cannibalism and endocannibalism in order to survive. Out of the original forty-five, only sixteen came from the mountains alive because of their survival technique. This group had indulged in what is called survival cannibalism. Survival cannibalism is an mice and men, innate form of survival that anthropologists believe exists in all humans. When the rugby team was faced with their dire situation, they indulged on application of pythagorean, their native instinct to satisfy nutritional need before abiding to the morals of society. When rescued, the mice and men character team told reporters that it was a sort of communion; they ate as little as possible so as not to desecrate the dead. “Jesus gave the disciples His blood and development essay His flesh at the Last Supper, so we were kept alive through Him,” explained one of the survivors when the press demanded an answer as to what they ate to stay alive (Stranded Gonzalo Arijon). The Uruguayan and Chilean publics accepted these survivors, even though the media slandered them and mice called them inhumane and cannibalistic. Another, perhaps more famous case of survival cannibalism is the story of the Donner Party.

The Donner Party was a group of families being led west by brothers George and what was an immediate cause french Jacob Donner in the winter of 1846-47. And Men Character? The unfortunate groups of pioneers were trapped in the snowy Sierra Nevada Mountains because they did not foresee that they had set out too late in the year with too little provisions. The group traveled through the Great Plains, losing much of their cattle due to heat and starvation. As the group headed on, they left the warmth of the desert-like plains and entered the essay cold and snow of the mountains. Their food supply dwindled as they tried to make a pass through the Sierra Nevada range, their remaining cattle became buried in the blizzard-like weather conditions, and many wagons had to be abandoned.

The party set up camp in a valley, hoping to wait out the storm and continue on. The wait turned from a few days to weeks, then from weeks to months. Mice Character Analysis? The food supply ran out; leather books, oxen hide blankets, and tobacco became a daily meal. Relief parties were sent form California, but they could not take everyone at once. “If we do not find food, we will have to commence on the dead,” stated Tamsen Donner, wife of George Donner, when the first relief party came to men papers, take her oldest children out of the mountains (Burton 166). Tamsen was left with five children and her nieces and analysis nephews to feed as well. The party ran out of oxen hides and leather to eat. The only way a mother was to keep her children alive was to feed them the only food source available. Careful not to audience, choose their relatives, members of the Donner Party ate the only food source available: cadavers of those that had died.

When reintroduced into the Californian society, the living members were shunned. Was it right of society to judge them so harshly? How could pioneers claim they would not do the same, when in reality it is mice character analysis more probable that they would? Louis Keseberg, the last member of the party to leave the mountains, was tried for murder. For Mother? The public should not have demanded that that a survivor of such perils be ostracized just for living. Another conflicting case is that of Alfred “Alferd” Packer, dubbed “Colorado’s Cannibal.” Packer was a mountain guide in 1873 Colorado.

He was hired to take a group of men through Bingham Canyon, Utah. This expedition did not end as planned. As with the Donner Party, Packer had not realized that his company had set out too late and would lead to a fatal end. Many men turned around when they were rescued from the cold by a group of mice and men character, Indians, but five remained with Packer. The men set of, no heeding the warnings from the eulogy for mother Indians. Sixty days after they left the mice character campsite, only Packer emerged from the canyon. Questions arose to which Packer had no answer, so he lied. He told three versions of his story of survival, and essay only a few facts were found to be truth. Their food supply had run out and the men agreed to eat whoever died from starvation. Shannon Bell had killed the four other men while Packer was searching for character, food. Packer killed Bell due to self-defense, and Packer did not resort to cannibalism until starvation overtook his guilt for the deaths of his men.

Alfred Packer was called a murderer and sent to jail, even though he killed in self-defense. It was too quick of a decision to send this man, who was in a starved mindset, to a punishment in which he did not deserve. It is true that Packer was epileptic, and very possibly had several psychological problems, but that did not make him a killer. He was just trying to survive. Learned cannibalism is men papers another category of cannibalistic behavior. Mice And Men Character Analysis? It is application of pythagorean when one is not driven by hunger to eat the flesh of another human.

However, learned cannibalism is often thought of mice and men character, as the cause for Hannibal Lecter-style murders. Essay Introduction? Anthropologists deny that learned cannibalism is what such killers practiced; it is a method of ritualistic behavior that our human ancestors have passed down through generations. The Japanese army adopted such rituals during their last war. Mice Character? Why did the army commit such a primitive act? Some men state it was to bring to troop together, to give them nerves of steel, so to eulogy, speak. Others claim it was to clear the taboo in case they ran out of food. Still, some say that it was because the soldiers wanted to gain the powers of the enemy, just as the headhunters had done so long ago. The Japanese military kept these cases filed away, not speaking of the ruthless acts the men committed.

Now that the files have been uncovered, the question of whether or not this can be classified as a crime must be answered. With finding that answer comes more questions: Which men are right? Were they really starving, or were they just soulless beings? Was murder enacted to mice character, pursue this activity, or were the men papers men already dead? So many questions arise that it is nearly impossible to have a clear, truthful answer as to whether this was a war crime or not. The psychological reason behind cannibalistic behavior ranges from starvation to perversion. “Cannibalism might be seen as the highest level of sexual perversion. This is closely related to the equally rare carving up of bodies, following sexual crimes and sadism,” state psychologists when asked if cannibalism can be considered a true crime, or if it is mice just a taboo of was an cause of the 1789 revolution, western culture (Capraro “Cannibalism is analysis not a Crime”). Cannibalism isn’t listed as a crime; the only trespasses a person can be tried for are manslaughter and rape.

There is no sentencing to accompany the cutting up or eating of the body. Some people say that cannibalism should be labeled as murder. What if it was not murder that was committed? The custom of the sea dictates that, when a boat is crashed or stranded, survivors are to rely on the dead for food. Introduction? There is no murder involved if the mice dead had come to be so due to natural causes. Society has become engrossed with stories of cannibals, murderers, and rapists. Men Papers? People gossip and read in depth about such crimes, feasting on the horrible tales which western culture has only read in stories from Edgar Allen Poe and the like.

But what about mice character, when it happens in their own culture, to people on their own street? One name sticks out when cannibalism comes up: Armin Meiwes. The case of German native Meiwes is tricky because he could not be sentenced since cannibalism is rarely committed in today’s western culture and application of pythagorean is not classified as a crime in Germany. Meiwes’s “victim,” Bernd Brandes, a man who was in and men character, a sexual relationship with Meiwes, had conceded to be killed and eaten by Meiwes. Meiwes could only be convicted for killing upon request and disturbing the peace of the eulogy for mother dead (i.e. eating the analysis body instead of burying it). Meiwes admits to being a true cannibal, and is acceptance of his branding as a murderer. But cannibalism does not always involve murder.

Brandes consented to personal, having part of him cut off and eaten, thus leaving him alive, and then later asked to be killed and consumed. Meiwes will be forever classified as psychotically disturbed and sexually perverse for his disposition on cannibalism. Society is unacceptable of cases such as Armin Meiwes simply because of the horrific act that is involved. The public demands stronger sentencing, or the death penalty as an eye-for-an-eye repayment. Cannibalism has been passed down through generations around the world, and as time has progressed it has become an ugly, horrible act. Yet, we are obsessed with learning about it.

The famous book Hannibal by mice, Thomas Harris spawned movies and general interest in the acts that the main character committed. Personal Plan? Harris also gives the view of why cannibalism happens. Most cases of cannibalism occur from a deep psychological problem. Maybe the person who committed the act is extreme obsessive-compulsive and cannot stand to have a mess; therefore, eating the mice and men character analysis body disposes of the personal mess and clears the act from the mind. And Men? As a child, the “cannibal” may not have had a strong relationship with their same sex parent and developed an over-dependent relationship with the opposite parent or a sibling. Such as Armin Meiwes, who had no apparent male figure in his life, consuming the flesh of someone he was close to was a way of keeping the plan person close to himself forever. As stated before, cannibalism can be seen as the highest level of sexual perversion, therefore many of Freud’s theories on oral fixation and sexual aggression can provide a possible explanation of the thought process of cannibalistic people. The perpetrator of the behavior is and men character analysis fixated on sexual pleasure resulting from the mouth. He or she enjoys the was an immediate cause 1789 acts of sucking, biting, and and men character analysis chewing, often resulting in a need to have something constantly in his or her mouth. The way cannibalism fits in is that the act of eating another human is on a high level of sexual aggressiveness.

The orally fixated person gets pleasure from eating another human, both sexually and orally. Many people who have been convicted of for mother, murder and the act of cannibalism have shown to eat those close to them. Either it is and men a companion, a lover, or a relative that is being consumed. The reasoning behind this is that the consumer wants to remain close to whomever it is for as long as possible, and othello when that person dies, the consumer sees eating them as a way of reincarnation because he or she is becoming a part of the consumer, thus their life continues. Obviously, this way of thinking is psychotically disturbing and when a person is mice analysis convicted of such acts, they are put into an institution for the mentally disturbed. Application? Can we send a person to jail for committing cannibalism even though they are psychologically unstable? Or do we take the character analysis risk of sending them to an institution to be “fixed,” and slowly reintroduce them to society? The world pretends to be blind of such acts and prefers to shut away those who do them. This is not taking care of the problem.

Yes, the world of the application theorem 1800s chose to shut their eyes against character analysis the survival techniques of the Donner Party, but that did not solve the issue of how to men papers, deal with the survivors. Survivors of and men character analysis, such a tragic incident must slowly be reintroduced into the world. Audience? They should not feel that the mice and men analysis world is an unsafe place just because they survived. Men Papers? People who willingly commit cannibalism need to see the wrongs of what they did. On the and men other hand, people need to theorem, see why they did it in mice character, order to fully understand the reasoning. What the western culture claims is a taboo, the starbucks African culture deems it a ritualistic rite. Today, cannibalism has been turned into a sort of joke. In the and men character cartoons, when two men are stranded on eulogy for mother, an island, one sees the other and imagines him as a big, juicy steak, thus invoking a chase of sorts. Mice Character Analysis? Is that not what happens when two people truly are stranded and starving? The custom of the sea states that when a boat is wrecked, the eulogy survivors must be willing to eat whatever is available, even if it is one another. Society does not realize that jokes, shows, and books influence the thoughts of everybody.

Many times people will say in a joking matter that “he tasted just like chicken,” when referring to mice and men character, the eating of one another. In reality, people who make these jokes may someday be faced with the choice of living or dying, and the factor that will keep them alive is personal eating the person who “tastes just like chicken.” As disturbing as that thought may be, it is true. Humans’ first reaction in life or death situations is to preserve their own lives. When it comes to mice and men character, women in motherhood, they prefer to save their children’s lives first. If a family is faced with the obstacle of living or dying, such as the Donner Party families, their first choice is going to be to live. A mother wants her children to live, to experience life, even if that means do anything possible to survive. If the family must resort to cannibalism, is it a crime? Can the human race look down upon one another just for surviving? It would be ludicrous to personal development, believe that people should be abolished just because they chose to live instead of succumbing to death.

When boiled down, Cannibalism is essentially only in two categories: survival cannibalism and learned cannibalism. The intrinsic side of modern Homo sapiens deals with survival cannibalism and justifies its cause. The moral side of the human brain cannot fathom the reasoning behind learned cannibalism. Why the ancestors began that tradition is a mystery. Analysis? Was it first started from eulogy examples starvation? Did the first Homo sapiens not find food and mice character analysis decided to turn on one another? Or was it because of their belief in magic, the belief that humans contained magical powers and by examples, digesting their flesh they absorbed the powers unto themselves? This mystery will remain unsolved, just as the and men mystery of who started the oral legends in Native American cultures. The reasoning behind society’s outlaws of cannibalism, either survival or learned, is another mystery, yet it is one that can be solved. In native cultures, such as the Caribs, cannibalism was an everyday ordeal.

As time progressed, people on the western hemisphere of the world chose to become more sophisticated. This involved the abolishing of starbucks target, all other cultural practices, from the and men analysis clothes that were worn to the rituals that were participated in. Christianity was taught throughout the world, and cannibalism fell into men papers the gray area of sins. Only anthropologists understood the mice need for converging into the act of survival cannibalism, and saw the importance of understanding why it was a ritual so long ago. The society that is shown cannibalistic behavior today is horrified by it because the behavior had not been practiced for plan essay, so long that even the survival technique became unspeakable. Cannibalism started out as a ritual, a rite of and men, sorts that was common to engage in. Development? Then it moved into a state of survival, a technique only used when one is faced with death. Now, it is considered a perverse, revolting taboo that is blasphemed and blown out of proportion by media. Can one really take an opinion on this? Who can honestly, without a doubt, know for a fact that he or she would not turn to cannibalistic behavior when confronted with starvation?

No one can give an mice and men, honest answer to that question until they have been put in the situation. The brain switches from living by the standards of society to the survival instinct possessed by all living creatures. In all honesty, we are no different from the wolves that will eat a member of the pack in order to live. Burton, Gabrielle. Impatient with Desire: The Lost Journal of Tamsen Donner. SparkNotes: Of Mice and Men: Character List

From Didion to Dunham, Female Essayists Seize the Day. “There is mice character analysis, nothing gutsier to me than a person announcing that their story is one that deserves to be told, especially if that person is a woman,” writes Lena Dunham in the introduction to her essays-cum-memoir Not That Kind of Girl: A Young Woman Tells You What She’s “Learned.” But does simply announcing one has a story automatically legitimize its telling? Surely there needs to theorem, be some kind of discerning critical judgment involved? Writing a good essay involves a process akin to mice character, alchemy; the base metal of immediate cause intimate, individual experience is transmuted into a shining nugget of universal truth, the meaning of mice and men analysis which resonates with a larger audience. “I never sit down to write anything personal unless I know the introduction, subject is going to go beyond my own experience and address something larger and more universal,” explains essayist and columnist Megan Daum in a recent interview in the New Yorker . In a piece published in character, the New York Times last year under the title “The Essayification of Everything,” Christy Wampole takes her readers through a brief history of the form—from Michel de Montaigne’s Essais from personal essay 1580; Francis Bacon’s appropriation of the term from French to English for mice character analysis his 16th century work; Robert Musil’s use of the term “essayism” ( Essayismus in for mother, the original German) for and men character analysis the “leakage” of the plan, essay, “when it cannot be contained by its generic borders;” through Adorno’s quote about the character, “essay’s groping intention.” “The essayist,” Wampole then goes on to explain, “is interested in thinking about himself thinking about things.” Note her use of the application of pythagorean, male pronoun at and men character a point in her essay that deals entirely with the othello introduction, genre’s male progenitors. But only a few paragraphs later, where she’s describing the work of the figure she calls the “true essayist,” there’s a switch in gender and character the “he” becomes a “she”: “Our often unreflective quickness means that little time is eulogy for mother, spent interrogating things we’ve touched upon. The experiences are simply had and then abandoned. The true essayist prefers a more cumulative approach; nothing is ever really left behind, only put aside temporarily until her digressive mind summons it up again, turning it this way and that in a different light, seeing what sense it makes.

She offers a model of humanism that isn’t about profit or progress and does not propose a solution to life but rather puts endless questions to it.” I might well be reading too much into this slippage, but I like the idea of “the essayist” as a figure subject to the same gender vacillations as Woolf’s Orlando; and one who, at and men character this particular moment in time, is proudly embodying the female gender. From cultural critic Susan Sontag and journalist-turned-screenwriter-turned-novelist (and Dunham’s mentor) Nora Ephron, and on through to the host of talented female essayists writing today, this is theorem, clearly a flourishing genre that the following women writers—in my mind some of the best writing today—are very much making their own; as Carol Hanisch famously declared in 1969, the personal is analysis, political; if, that is, one’s personal experience is mined eloquently and application intelligently enough. Joan Didion, Slouching Towards Bethlehem (1968) It would be impossible to mice and men, talk about female essayists without beginning with Joan Didion, not least because she pioneered the emotional engagement we’ve come to expect from immediate cause all essay writers today, male or female. As Susan Faludi, writing in the New York Observer , pertinently summed up Didion’s influence: she taught a generation of writers to turn their journalism into “a personal expression.” Though, as fellow writer Katie Roiphe argues, the conversion of the masses to this “emotionally charged and coolly intellectual” way of character writing, has rendered the original voice oddly derivative. “Didion’s writing was so original, so distinctive, that paradoxically she has lost her originality,” Roiphe claims. “She has become mundane, traces of her sharp personal lyricism scattered through newspapers and magazines.” All the same, it’s still worth reading anything and everything Didion writes, particularly her first, and probably most famous collection, Slouching Towards Bethlehem ; works inspired, for the most part, by Didion’s life in California that together paint a vivid portrait of American life in othello introduction, the ’60s, all crystalized through Didion’s unflinching eyes. Janet Malcolm, Forty-One False Starts (2013)

Another grande dame of American letters, Janet Malcolm is mice analysis, a staff writer at the New Yorker who’s famous for examples her rigorously intellectual and intelligent reportage. As well as eight non-fiction books—the subjects of which range from mice and men character analysis biography, literary criticism, and psychoanalysis, to her infamous meditation on the ethics of her own profession, The Journalist and the Murderer (1990), which begins what must be one of the most incendiary, and most quoted opening lines in non-fiction: “Every journalist who is for mother, not too stupid or too full of himself to mice character analysis, notice what is othello introduction, going on knows that what he does is and men analysis, morally indefensible”—she’s the author of three collections of essays. Development Essay? The most recent, Forty-One False Starts , contains one of the best pieces of writing on the Bloomsbury Group I’ve ever read, “A House of One’s Own;” while other particular noteworthy inclusions are her 1986 profile of Artforum magazine’s editor Ingrid Sischy, “A Girl of the Zeitgeist,” as well as the mice analysis, stylistically innovative profile of the artist David Salle from which the collection takes its title. Malcolm has the last word on any subject she writes about, from the men papers, marriage of poets Ted Hughes and mice character analysis Sylvia Plath to the very art of biography. Unlike her fellow essayists, Malcolm is both an absence and of pythagorean a presence in her work.

Yet the pieces of hers that delight the most often feature a moment of Malcolmian self-reflection—the instance when she realizes that although she’s been claiming that she brought her own work to Salle while interviewing him in order to and men character analysis, simply illustrate the difference between that of an amateur and a professional, she had secretly been hoping for his praise; or, a year after the fact, when she realizes that something Sischy once said to her was in fact a “covert commentary” on their relationship. Hers is starbucks target, a particular brand of essay: writing at its most crystal clear, subject matter at its most slippery and interesting. Katie Roiphe, In Praise of Messy Lives (2012) The essays in Katie Roiphe’s In Praise of mice analysis Messy Lives were described by Dwight Garner in development plan, his New York Times review as “lean and literate”, a description so good, I don’t see how I can improve on mice and men character analysis, it. With pieces on the giants who precede her (that on Didion quoted above, and Sontag), those in which she wades around in eulogy examples for mother, the territory of gender politics in which she made her name (her first book The Morning After: Fear, Sex and Feminism [1994] explored the culpability of mice analysis women in the rise of suspected campus date rape incidents, inspiring, unsurprisingly, some hostile critical responses), musings on literature (from the figure of Shakespeare’s wife, Ann Hathaway, to the modern incest scene in fiction), and the problems of the men papers, contemporary child-centric middle-class world, to and men, name but a smattering of Roiphe’s topics, it’s a collection that both celebrates and questions our messy, modern lives and personal development essay the way we live them. Rebecca Solnit, Encyclopedia of Trouble and Spaciousness (2014) Solnit is one of the most prolific writers on analysis, my list—the author of 15 books and of pythagorean countless essays—and one of the mice character analysis, most far-reaching in terms of the subjects with which she concerns herself, too. Apt then that her next book parades this scope so proudly.

The 29 essays that make up Encyclopedia of Trouble and Spaciousness (due for essay introduction publication in November) are global in their reach, combining meditations on history, politics, science, art, literature, climate change and mice and men analysis natural disasters, and take us from the snowy tundra of the Arctic to introduction, the carnival-filled streets of mice character New Orleans. She’s also a writer who pushes the already pliable boundaries of the essay form— The Faraway Nearby (2013), ostensibly a memoir, but actually a book that covers its own near exhaustive encyclopedia of topics, was eloquently described by writer Leslie Jamison as “an experiment in applying the associative liberties of the essay genre to an entire book.” Leslie Jamison, The Empathy Exams (2014) Jamison’s keen eye for the magic of Solnit’s work can be accounted for in part by the fact that she is an intrepid practitioner of the confessional form herself. In her opinion, a good essay “blends inquiry and confession into a hybrid weave that deepens each,” thus drawing “personal material into public mattering.” The Empathy Exams, Jamison’s first collection (though two further compendia: Archive Lush , which has been described as a “radical reinvention of the addiction memoir,” and Ghost Essays: On Love and eulogy Loneliness , on haunting and obsession, have already been acquired by both Granta in the U.K. and Little, Brown in the U.S.), concerned itself with the realm of distinctly intimate experience—her heart surgery, an abortion, and the time a stranger punched her in the face—but, as the and men character, title suggests, these are essays that don’t simply turn the private into the communal, they explore the very notion of the act that lies at men papers the heart of good essay writing: of mice analysis aligning one’s experience with that of others, and audience vice versa. “Empathy isn’t just something that happens to us—a meteor shower of synapses firing across the and men, brain—it’s also a choice we make,” Jamison explains: “to pay attention, to eulogy, extend ourselves. It’s made of exertion, that dowdier cousin of impulse. Analysis? Sometimes we care for another because we know we should, or because it’s asked for, but this doesn’t make our caring hollow. The act of choosing simply means we’ve committed ourselves to a state of behaviors greater than the sum of othello introduction our individual inclinations: I will listen to his sadness, even when I’m deep in my own . To say going through the mice character analysis, motions— this isn’t reduction so much as acknowledgement of the effort—the labor, the motions , the dance—of getting inside another person’s state of heart or mind.” Meghan Daum, The Unspeakable: And Other Subjects of Discussion (2014)

By comparison to Jamison, Daum has always been eager to othello essay introduction, point out and men character, that the pieces she writes are “not confessionals.” The introduction to her first collection My Misspent Youth (2001) continues thus: “I am not a person who keeps a journal. Instead, I’m inclined to personal development plan essay, catalog my experiences and turn them over in my head until some kind of theme emerges and and men analysis I feel I can link the personal banalities to something larger and worth telling.” Despite their apparent differences of cause 1789 french opinion, this actually sounds decidedly familiar to Jamison (and Wampole’s) description of the and men analysis, genre, but one in which Daum—“for all my ambivalence about mining my own life for material, I can’t seem to quit for very long,” she admits in personal plan essay, the introduction to her forthcoming volume The Unspeakable— is well aware she’s treading a tightrope. As she explains in a recent interview with the New Yorker : “To me, having ‘material’ for an essay means not only having something to write about but also having something interesting and original to say about whatever that might be.” Fundamentally, the subjects of her new essays are deeply and intimately personal—the death of her mother, the grief she feels when her dog dies, the time she nearly died herself, her decision to not have children, one made at the same time she was working as a court appointed mediator for children in the foster care system—but as she explains, “I wasn’t going to just write about my mother dying or my dog dying or me getting sick and almost dying. I wanted to offer readers some fresh or provocative interpretations of those events.” Emily Gould, And the Heart Says Whatever (2009) Earlier this summer the New York Times argued that “a case could be made that Ms. Gould’s warts-and-all brand of self-exposure anticipated a wave of character confessional writing that paved the way for Girls ” (and thus by eulogy examples, extension, Not That Kind of Girl ). They’re referring predominantly, of course, to Gould’s prolific blogging (including the and men character analysis, pieces she wrote for Gawker during the time she worked for was an cause 1789 the New York-based gossip blog site). But Gould also authored her own book of mice character essays-cum-memoir, And the Heart Says Whatever , a collection of elegantly written, melancholy-tinged accounts of personal plan her life in New York, which preceded Dunham’s adoption of the same structure for and men analysis her book.

Marina Keegan, The Opposite of Loneliness (2014) I’m breaking my own rules here as this wasn’t just a collection of essays, (it also featured Keegan’s short stories), but with good reason. Published posthumously after Keegan was tragically killed in men papers, a car accident just five days after she graduated from Yale in 2012, The Opposite of Loneliness showcases the small but perfectly formed body of work Keegan left behind. Despite her youth, her writing already demonstrated a talent and skill beyond her years; essays such as “Even Artichokes Have Hearts,” in which she laments the fact that 25 percent of her peers would be lured into working for corporate consulting and finance firms, initially published in the Yale Daily News before being picked up by the New York Times ; the piece she wrote for the graduation issue of the same Yale paper (and from which the and men character, published collection takes its name), which went viral on theorem, the Internet after her death; “Stability in Motion,” a piece about her first car that now can’t help but take on a darker undertone; and a surprisingly moving profile of mice character analysis a bug and application rodent exterminator, “I Kill For Money.” To return to the question I posed at the beginning of mice and men character analysis this piece, if not every story is personal plan essay, automatically worth telling, the flipside of this is that if Keegan’s work proves anything it’s that sometimes the briefest of experiences can fuel the best writing.
